Our story

We are Financial Advisers, Financial Planners and Investment Managers – but with a twist…

Most other Financial Advisory and Investment Management firms focus on recommending and arranging investments.

There’s nothing wrong with that. But…..in order to get people to invest with them, they tend to ‘sell’ their services on one of two promises…

  1. We’ll make your money grow faster.
  2. We’ll charge you less.

Some even claim to do both.

The problem with number 1 is that no one can guarantee that.

Markets go up. Markets go down.

You can’t control them or foresee them – no matter what you wish, or what anyone tells you.

The problem with the 2nd promise is……..as John Ruskin famously said….. “There is hardly anything in the world that cannot be made a little worse and sold a little cheaper, and those who consider price alone are that person’s lawful prey.”

We don’t make either of those promises. In fact we Tell it like it is.

  1.  We can’t always guarantee your investments will go up.
  2. There are cheaper options out there.

Our real value is in managing investors’ emotions.

Stopping clients making unhelpful, knee-jerk financial and investment decisions out of fear and worry.

The Joslin Rhodes way…

We mentioned earlier that we are Financial Advisers and Investment Managers with a twist, and the twist is that we provide a Lifestyle Financial Planning service.

We only work with clients who are at or approaching retirement and who engage with our full Lifestyle Financial Planning process which includes Life & Retirement Coaching and Planning – we don’t provide Financial Advice or Investment Management services in isolation – only as part of our full service.

The roles

There are three main roles that are involved in delivering the Joslin Rhodes Lifestyle Financial Planning process and if you’d like to be a member of our team it’s likely that your skills and experience sits within one of these roles.

Financial Planner

Financial Planners do the coaching and planning work with the clients and deliver the financial advice.

They are the primary liaison with the clients and guide them through the process.

  • Social skills – A love of coaching and helping people.
  • Likeability & Engagement – The ability to sell the concept of Lifestyle Financial Planning. You can have the best service in the world – but if you can’t engage people in it and help them see the value of it then it doesn’t really matter.
  • Human Diagnostics – The ability to see the contradictions, obstacles and irrationalities in a clients mind and to coach and challenge them positively to a more healthy mindset.
  • Drive & Ambition – Working with people all day in a challenging and sometimes emotional environment takes a lot of energy. The hours can be long.
  • Technical Skills – Not only do you need to have all the human skills, you’ve also got to be able to understand and convey logic and analysis.
  • Academia – You will be working through your Diploma in Financial Planning which is six examination modules and requires a lot of home study.
  • Simplify complex things – Any fool can make something complicated, the genius is in keeping it simple. That’s how you enable clients to make their own informed decisions.

Starting salary £25k increasing to £50k, plus bonus – taking on target earnings up to £70k. Salary increases with promotions eg Supervisor, Manager etc.

Paraplanner

Paraplanners are the engineers and spend most of their time on using software, doing analysis, and writing technical reports to formulate the financial advice.

This is about diagnosis, analytics, and financial engineering.

  • Analysis & Maths – Most of your time is spent on your PC using software to analyse numbers. If you get your energy from using spreadsheets to create order out of chaos then paraplanning is your thing.
  • Technical Diagnostics – The desire to make an architect’s plans work even if you don’t appear to have all the materials required. This needs problem-solving skills and a logical yet creative mind.
  • Integrity – The client is relying on you to help them to the life and lifestyle that they want and that should give you an energy to succeed and a pride in your work seeing it implemented in someone’s life.
  • Diligence – You don’t have the luxury of getting it wrong first time – people are making life-changing decisions based on your calculations. Think about that next time you walk over a bridge.
  • Technical Skills – Not only do you need to have all the human skills, you’ve also got to be able to understand and convey logic and analysis.
  • Academia – You will be working through your Diploma in Financial Planning which is six examination modules and requires a lot of home study. If you want to move into a specialist role thereafter you’ll also be completing the Advanced Diploma.
  • Junior Level Paraplanner  – £25,000
  • Mid Level Paraplanner – £32,500
  • Senior Level Paraplanner – £42,500
  • Lead Level Paraplanner – £50,000

Client Servicing

This role is the glue in between the stages and the engine room of the whole process.

It’s about making sure that clients are looked after and feel the warmth and comfort of knowing that everything is going to be OK.

  • Friendliness & Helpfulness – You’re the first face they see and the first voice they hear.
  • Customer Service – You know how to get things done quickly and efficiently to impress a client.
  • Warmth – A client will remember that you took the time to check that everything was OK with, them far longer than anything written in a technical report.
  • Reliability & Diligence – If the clients asked you to process a withdrawal for that great holiday or house deposit for the kids – it needs to get done on time.
  • Keeping everyone right – You’re dealing with a multitude of third parties and institutions on behalf of your client and they may not be delivering the customer service standard that they should so your job is to manage that and ensure it never impacts our client.

Starting salary £21,100 increasing with responsibilities and opportunities for various roles and ability to progress into management.
